“Everything is scary when it’s big.” -Chase Bultemeier
That was my son’s response when I told him I saw a rather large raccoon in our yard. I explained to him that it was abnormally big, not living in the suburbs, kind of big. In my mind, it seemed like a giant raccoon. If you know me personally, you know my tendency to exaggerate and my love for telling stories in a dramatic fashion. Since my kids know this too, I am sure that Chase was humoring me with his statement. “Really Mom, a giant raccoon?”
One of the first bible stories I remember hearing as a child was the story of David and Goliath. Goliath was a nine-foot soldier of the Israelite army and David was just a boy. A boy that was supposed to be taking care of his flock, but instead stepped up and said he would go up against this giant. His only defense was that he believed that God would help him. As the story goes, David defeated Goliath. This bible story (like so many others) teach and remind us that when we are faced with something big and scary, God is greater than whatever is in front of us.
Is there a giant in your path right now?
Maybe it’s not a 9-foot giant (or a big raccoon), maybe it’s all the daily tasks that add up to seem like a giant in your path. Or maybe, it’s something that you can’t seem to overcome. Maybe, it’s self-esteem issues, a failing marriage, an addiction, relationship troubles, an illness, or parenting through the toddler years (or worse, the teenage years)! Maybe, it is all of those.
My Goliath can change daily. Last night it was 5th grade math homework with my child and not knowing if we would ever figure it out. The other day, it was a friend going in for surgery. The week before, it was sitting down with my husband to go over the yearly budget. In a few months my son begins his freshman year of high school. That may not seem like a giant to some, but it’s the present-day Goliath in my path. If it has you worried or the outcome unknown, it’s a Goliath.
We live in a world where just getting out of bed can be our own Goliath. Turning on our phone or computer instantly fills our day with news feeds and social media containing a multitude of judgements and opinions. That alone, can be big and scary. Sometimes it’s not the circumstance. Sometimes it’s the pressure we put on ourselves to achieve success that becomes the giant in front of us.
The whatever, whoever, or however doesn’t really matter. Why? Because in every season of life there will be giants in front of us. Real ones or the ones we create in our minds. But, as big and scary as they seem, we are not in this fight alone.
What if we faced our giants with the same words as David? “You come against me…but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.” Samuel 17:45
5th grade math homework, I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty! Yearly budget, I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty! Fear of losing a loved one to illness, I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty! Or, how about…. Addiction, Judgement, Fear, Marriage Troubles, Parenting Struggles, Self-Esteem Issues…ALL OF IT, I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty!
If you are facing something right now that just seems impossible to defeat, take comfort in knowing that no matter what has you scared or how big it seems, it’s the same today as it was for David in the bible. No matter what we are facing, we have the Loving and Almighty God on our side!
